When the contest was over, attorney Mike Quirk prevailed as the new chairman of the Delaware County Democratic Central Committee over former auto worker Jim Lutton.
“I want to get more people involved…engage young people,” said Quirk. “My door is open for everyone.”
Over 150 people were at downtown Democratic Party headquarters Wednesday for the caucus to select a new party leader,
The vote was 83-27 by precinct committeemen and vice committeemen for Quirk over Lutton to succeed Marge Landers as party chairman after a spring primary that saw candidates backed by party leaders lose to independent Democrats. A third candidate Jerome Williams Sr. withdrew before the vote, throwing his support to Lutton.
Lutton, who chaired Delaware County Commissioner Larry Bledsoe’s campaign, and his supporters wanted wanted a change to restore trust among the voters.
Delaware County Coroner James Clevenger Jr., who nominated Lutton, was critical of last minute efforts to fill some vice committeeman vacancies with those loyal to Quirk. And Williams encouraged Democrats to come together to defeat Republicans in the fall.
Quirk agreed that more than 20 vice committeemen were not eligible to vote after a challenge that the appointees did not reside in the precincts they represented came from committeeman Bob Wolf.
“I could not agree more we need to change some things in the party,” said Quirk.
Quirk was described as a leader and enthusiastic by supporters like police Sgt. Steve Stewart who nominated him. The new party leader declined to be negative or badmouth any Democrat, and instead criticized Republicans and Mayor Sharon McShurley, who he referred to as “that Knucklehead in city hall.”
Civility seem to prevail during Wednesday’s gathering as some longtime Democrats like retired firefighter and state lawmaker Hurley Goodall pointed out. He predicted a tough fight with Republicans in the fall even without Democrats fighting each other.
